Off-Duty Lifesaver Honoured for Heroic Thames River Rescue

In a remarkable display of bravery and quick thinking, Mark Pusey, a dedicated volunteer with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), was honoured with a prestigious Commendation from the Metropolitan Police. The commendation ceremony took place last Friday at the American Embassy in London, recognising Pusey’s life-saving actions during an incident on the River Thames in May of the previous year.

Pusey, who is also a professional session musician, was off-duty and enjoying a day on the river with friends when he heard a distress call over the radio. The call, known as a pan-pan, indicated an urgent situation requiring immediate attention. A woman had been discovered unconscious and face down in the water, presenting a dire situation that demanded swift intervention.

Without hesitation, Pusey sprang into action. Drawing on his extensive training with the RNLI, he managed to retrieve the woman from the water and began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). His efforts were successful, and the woman eventually began breathing on her own, a testament to Pusey’s skill and composure under pressure.

The commendation Pusey received, known as the Operational Command Unit (OCU) Commander's Commendation, is awarded to individuals who demonstrate exceptional bravery and go beyond the call of duty. Pusey, reflecting on the incident, expressed his gratitude for the training he received from the RNLI, stating, "I would have been in no position to have helped if it wasn't for the superb training the RNLI has given me. To me, it was the RNLI that helped save her."

Simon Edwards, the RNLI area operations manager for the Thames, also praised Pusey’s actions, highlighting the selfless nature of RNLI volunteers. "I'd like to take this opportunity to pass on my congratulations to Mark for his well-deserved Commendation. His act last May in saving a person's life really shows the typical selfless behaviour of all our volunteers and crew members across the RNLI," Edwards remarked.
