Ross Hamilton has been found guilty of murdering Reece Newcombe in Richmond, following a violent altercation involving a concealed piece of broken glass. The incident occurred on 26 November 2022, near Richmond Bridge, after both men had attended a World Cup viewing event and later visited a nightclub.
The events leading to this tragic incident began on a seemingly ordinary night when both Hamilton and Newcombe were among the crowd watching a World Cup match between England and the USA. The match was held at a popular 'Fanzone', a gathering spot for football enthusiasts. Following the game, both men proceeded to the Viva nightclub, although there was no interaction between them until the fateful encounter outside the venue.
According to sources, Hamilton exhibited aggressive behaviour throughout the night. Witnesses reported that he was in an agitated state, engaging in altercations with various individuals, including an assault on another man outside the nightclub. Despite being confronted by security personnel, Hamilton continued to provoke those around him, creating a tense atmosphere.
The situation escalated when Newcombe intervened, attempting to defuse the tension. However, this led to a brief but violent confrontation between the two men near Richmond Bridge. During the altercation, Hamilton used a concealed piece of broken glass to stab Newcombe in the neck. Onlookers rushed to Newcombe's aid, and emergency services, including police officers and paramedics, arrived promptly. Despite their efforts, Newcombe succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
In the aftermath of the attack, Hamilton fled the scene in a vehicle. However, an off-duty police officer, who witnessed the incident, followed Hamilton and provided crucial information about the vehicle's direction of travel. This, combined with witness accounts and CCTV footage, helped authorities piece together the events of that night.
Two days after the incident, Hamilton turned himself in at Acton police station, aware that he was the subject of an extensive police manhunt. He was subsequently charged with Newcombe's murder on 30 November 2022.
Reece Newcombe, a 31-year-old boxing trainer from Egham, Surrey, was remembered by friends and family as a "loveable, fun guy loved by all." He had worked with celebrities, including former footballer Ian Wright, and was a devoted father to his daughter, Misse. At the time of his death, Newcombe's partner was expecting their second child, a daughter born the following summer.
In the wake of Newcombe's tragic death, a GoFundMe page was established by his friend Jamie Dobson to support Newcombe's children. The campaign raised £128,940, reflecting the widespread affection and support for Newcombe and his family.
During the trial, Detective Inspector Kevin Martin from Specialist Crime South described Hamilton's actions as senseless violence. He noted that Hamilton's decision to conceal a broken piece of glass indicated a level of premeditation. The detective emphasised that Hamilton's choice to strike Newcombe in the neck demonstrated a clear intent to cause catastrophic harm.
Newcombe's family expressed their gratitude to the witnesses who bravely testified in court, as well as the police and family liaison officers who supported them throughout the ordeal. They described Newcombe as the "shining light" of their family, whose life was brutally cut short by Hamilton's actions.
The family also acknowledged the overwhelming outpouring of grief and support from the community following Newcombe's passing. Thousands of people participated in a memorial walk to lay wreaths at the site of the incident, a testament to the impact Newcombe had on those around him.
As Hamilton awaits sentencing, Newcombe's family hopes that justice will be served, ensuring that Hamilton faces the full weight of the law. They expressed relief that Hamilton will no longer pose a threat to the public, particularly to the women he had previously attacked.
Hamilton is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on 11 October, where the full extent of his punishment will be determined. The case underscores the importance of addressing aggressive behaviour and ensuring that justice is served for victims and their families.
