Thames Water, the largest water supplier in the United Kingdom, has firmly denied allegations that its water supply is linked to recent illnesses reported in London. The company has emphasized that there is "zero evidence" to support claims that their water is causing health issues. This statement comes in response to calls from the Labour Party for more rigorous water quality testing. The Shadow Environment Secretary of the Labour Party has urged Thames Water to conduct urgent tests at water treatment facilities following reports of illness in Beckenham, where numerous residents have experienced symptoms such as stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea.

The controversy began when a report in The Guardian highlighted concerns about the water quality in Beckenham. It was alleged that Thames Water had only tested the water at a single property in the area. However, Thames Water has countered these claims, stating that extensive testing has been conducted not only in Beckenham but also in reservoirs and water treatment facilities serving various parts of London. The company reported that tests were carried out in 16 homes in Beckenham, all of which returned clear results. Additionally, nearly 2,000 tests conducted across London in May have also shown no signs of contamination.

Thames Water, which serves millions of customers, has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of its water supply. The company has stated that ongoing testing is being conducted to reassure customers, even though no issues have been detected. This proactive approach is intended to address the concerns of residents who have resorted to boiling their tap water as a precautionary measure.

A spokesperson for Thames Water stated, "There is zero evidence that the water we are supplying is causing any illness. Where customers have reported an issue, we are undertaking tests, all of which have so far come back showing that London's water remains at our usual high quality, wholesome standards. We have carried out extensive testing in the Beckenham area since last week, including the reservoirs and water treatment works that serve this and other areas as well as at customers' properties. This includes tests from 16 homes all of which have come back clear, and almost 2,000 tests across London this month, again, all of which have come back clear."

The spokesperson further emphasized that the ongoing testing is primarily for customer reassurance and not due to any detected problems. Thames Water conducts routine monitoring and regular sampling across its entire supply area to verify the excellent quality of the drinking water it provides. The company takes pride in the fact that since 2010, more than 99.95% of tests taken from customers' taps have met the standards required by UK legislation. Annually, Thames Water performs over 500,000 tests, taking samples from the source to the tap.
