Asahi UK has revealed its decision to shut down its brewing operations in Greenwich and relocate production of the Meantime and Dark Star brands to the Fuller’s brewery site in Chiswick, London.
The move, according to Asahi, aims to capitalize on its extensive brewing expertise and capabilities while enhancing the growth potential of its entire UK beer brand portfolio through more streamlined and sustainable operations.
While announcing the transition, the company assures consumers that the Dark Star and Meantime brands will maintain their distinct identities.
Asahi acquired the Meantime brand back in 2016, while Dark Star became part of its portfolio following Fuller’s acquisition by Asahi in 2019.
As part of its future plans, Asahi intends to establish a dedicated consumer retail experience in Greenwich, celebrating the rich heritage of the Meantime brand, which was founded in 1999 by Alastair Hook.
In related news, Fuller’s Pubs George IV and Old Pack Horse are integral parts of the brewery's Chiswick history. The Old Pack Horse will be undergoing refurbishment from Sunday, March 10th, until April 2nd, 2024 and will be closed for the duration until the work has been completed.
Responding to the consolidation trend, Gillian Hough from the Campaign for Real Ale expressed concerns over the loss of brewing heritage and the impact on local communities and skilled brewers. She emphasized the importance of preserving the authenticity and diversity in the beer market amid such mergers and acquisitions.
