Amid the aftermath of the Christmas season, a total of 14 bank branches are slated for closure, with significant impacts on high street banks such as Barclays, Bank of Scotland, NatWest, and Halifax. Barclays plans to shut seven branches, while Bank of Scotland will close one, with both NatWest and Halifax facing the closure of three branches each.
Specifically, NatWest is set to close its branch at 314 Chiswick High Road, London, England, on 20/02/2024, alongside other closures at 151 New Line, Bradford, England, on 21/02/2024, and 2 Greenwich Church Street, Greenwich, England, on 22/02/2024.
This news follows a broader trend, as consumer watchdog Which? reports that around 5,791 branches have closed since January 2015, averaging approximately 54 closures per month.
This trend is expected to persist in 2024, with major lenders confirming multiple closures.
The impact is so significant that Link, an organization tasked with assessing the situation, is considering alternative banking services for towns losing their last bank, such as cash machines, cash deposit services, or hubs.
Cash Access UK, funded by major banks, is responsible for implementing these new services as demanded by Link.
